‘On A Monday/I Am Waiting/Tuesday, I’m Fading/And By Wednesday/I Can’t Sleep’. And on Thursday, I’m throwing it back! Guess what was released to radio TEN YEARS AGO today? Ashlee Simpson’s seminal #1 hit, ‘Pieces Of Me’, off her platinum selling debut album, ‘Autobiography’. Let’s go on a trip down memory lane for this iconic pop/rock anniversary…
I remember the first time hearing ‘Pieces Of Me’. I was like…great, another blonde pop star (this was obv during the six months where I was trying to shun pop music). Well, we already know how this worked out! ‘Pieces Of Me’ was the song that first introduced us to Jessica Simpson’s little sister. The girl who was supposed to be the anti-Britney, the one who was going to give Avril Lavigne a run for her money.
As chronicled on The Ashlee Simpson Show, ‘Pieces Of Me’ was written by Ashlee with John Shanks and Kara Dioguardi after her break up with Josh Henderson and as she was falling in love with Ryan Cabrera (the pop/rock Britney & Justin of their time). Lead by an acoustic guitar with a folky rhythm, ‘Pieces Of Me’ talks about the feeling of having something real in your life, someone who gets you for who you are, someone who you’ve known forever and knows you better than you know yourself. Was it the perfect first single to introduce the world to Ashlee Simpson, the pop star? Yes.
Not only was ‘Pieces Of Me’ a huge hit, but it had an incredible amount of longevity on the charts and help fuel the first week sales ‘Autobiography’. Debuting on radio in May, in the week ending of May 17, ‘Pieces Of Me’ was added to a record 97 RADIO STATIONS, which was the strongest week for any single in 2004 at that point. The song debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 at number 61 in June 2004, reached the top ten in August, and peaked at number five on the Hot 100 in September 2004. The single was certified gold in October 2004 and platinum in January 2005. Obviously, that isn’t all. ‘Pieces Of Me’ was number 39 on Billboard‘s 2004 year end Hot 100 Singles and number 36 on the year end Hot 100 Singles Sales chart. Oh and did I mention that ‘Pieces Of Me’ hit on the Billboard top 40 chart?
‘Pieces Of Me’ was EVERYWHERE in the summer of 2004. Ashlee performed in on countless talk shows. From her debut performance of it on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Good Morning America, TRL, and On Air With Ryan Seacrest you could not escape the magic that was ‘Pieces Of Me’.
Even today, ten years later, ‘Pieces Of Me’ is amazing. It takes me back to when Ashlee first came out and when I first started admiring her. I still get choked up and chills from time to time when I listen to it. This is where it all began. This is when she started her career as a multi-platinum recording artist and when she started to touch people with her music. ‘Pieces Of Me’ is iconic, it’s a great pop song, and it’s an important part of the MTV/TRLgeneration of pop. Without it, pop music would not be the same and I would not be the same.
